Ottawa Motorcycle Accident Lawyers David Hollingsworth. ?With the nice weather here, more and more motorcycles will be out on the roads and highway. We hope that all drivers are extra cautious and watching out for motorcycles that may be in your blind spot . Obviously motorcycles are much smaller than cars or trucks and are often more difficult to see.
Ottawa Police along with ?Safer Roads Ottawa and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation are working at reducing Ottawa motorcycle accidents by introducing their ?“Keep an Eye Out for Motorcycles” campaign. The main messages of the campaign is for motorists to share the roads and watch out for one another. Ottawa has also announced that ?May will be ?“Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month” .
As a Ottawa personal injury lawyer I meet regularly with people who have been in a motorcycle accident and have become severely injured. The reality is that motorcycle drivers have much less protection and often the injuries are devastating. ?Both motorists and motorcyclist need to share the road and be aware of one another.
Here are a few tips for drivers when it comes to motorcycles:
- Motorcycles require full lane and are no different than ?other vehicles.
- Share the road
- Follow at least 2 seconds or 2 chevrons behind the vehicle in front of you.
- Most motorcycle accidents happen between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., so be extra vigilant during these times.
- Over 1/3 of motorcycle accident happen at intersections. Be extra vigilant.
- Slow down at intersections.
- Avoid tailgating as this can be more dangerous to ?motorcyclists with less protection.
- Give motorcyclists enough room to change lanes. Although they are smaller, they still need room.
- Check ?mirrors often so you know where other vehicles are.
We can all put a little more effort into keeping our Ottawa roads a little safer. Motorcyclists and drivers have their role to play. Let’s play together and keep our Ottawa roads safe.

Now that spring is here ( at least until tomorrow) , the bicycles are out. ?Many people are biking to work , school and just about anywhere on their bicycles. ?Unfortunately, this also means an increased chance of cycling accidents in the Ottawa area. Sadly, Ottawa bicycle accidents have already begun and a 17-year-old teenage girl was rushed to an Ottawa?hospital in serious condition with ?a severe head injury. She had been biking in Kanata?this morning, when she was hit by a car as she crossed the street. The Kanata bicycle accident took place at Shirley’s Brook Drive close Kinross Private early this morning . I wish this young girl a full recovery and I hope she is able to completely get through this accident. My thoughts are with her, her family and her friends at this incredible stressful time.

Although it doesn’t look or feel like it, spring is officially here. ?With the warm weather coming , more Ottawa pedestrians will be taking to the streets. Here are a few things you can do to keep yourself safe.
To avoid a pedestrian accident, you?should…
- always cross at crossways or traffic lights
- be alert
- ensure drivers see you before you cross any road;
- only cross a road when traffic has stopped;
- be cautious when crossing and do so promptly. Don’t waste time and make sure you get completely across before the light changes.
- do not wear headphones to listen to music. You need to hear the sounds around you.
- be aware of cars that may be turning and may not be able to see you;
- as much as possible, wear bright clothing or reflective wear and make yourself as visible as possible. ?Most of all, use common sense.
Accident benefits for pedestrian accidents
Did you know that pedestrians are entitled to accident benefits is they become injured as the result of a motor vehicle accident? A personal injury insurance claim is mad through the drivers insurance company and things like income replacement benefits, rehabilitation expenses, attendant care, hospital expenses, loss of education expenses, housekeeping, expenses of visitors etc.. can be covered
There are far too many Ottawa pedestrian accidents each year and sadly, most of them could be avoided. ?Both motorists and pedestrians need to ensure that they are doing everything they can to keep Ottawa roads safe and accident free. Ottawa Snow Storm
Well done Ottawa. ?We survived what seemed to be an incredible amount of snow fall yesterday. ?It was recorded that we received close to 15 centimeters but it did feel like much more. ?In Ottawa/Gatineau there were a reported 95 car accidents. Ottawa paramedics responded to 26 accident related calls but thankfully no serious injuries were reported. ?I say well done. While it would have been great to avoid all accidents, in weather like yesterday’s, it is bound to happen. The fact that there were no serious injuries tells me that Ottawa drivers are driving more cautiously and adjusting their driving to the conditions of the roads . Well done Ottawa. (Maybe you all read my earlier post on safe driving in winter weather ) All kidding aside, I think this is great.
Continue to use your best driving skills as we aren’t out of the woods yet. ?Ottawa roads are covered in snow and may make for challenging driving conditions. Most of all ensure you have enough space between you and the driver in front of you. Slow down and eyes on the road at all times !
Safe travels home ..and if you are like me, safe travels to your kids extra-curricular activities once you get home !
