People suffering from a brain injury frequently suffer from confusion and experience difficulty performing familiar day-to-day tasks. These injuries can be categorized in two types:
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)
A mild traumatic brain injury typically causes a loss of consciousness and/or disorientation that lasts 30 minutes or less. Referred to as “invisible injuries,” these injuries are difficult to detect with CT scans and MRIs. Furthermore, someone with a mild traumatic brain injury can appear perfectly healthy to others and are often never properly diagnosed or treated. While the term “mild” describes the contrast in symptoms with more severe brain injuries, the potential life-long effects are far from mild. Symptoms may include:
- Speech difficulty
- Confusion or memory lapse
- Dizziness and nausea
- Light and sound sensitivity
- Mood swings and irritability
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A traumatic brain injury is generally categorized by a loss of consciousness from 20 minutes to six hours. They can result in serious physical and mental impairments. These injuries share some of the same symptoms as a mild traumatic brain injury; however are usually more severe and can render someone comatose.
Additional signs include:
- Convulsions and seizures
- Severe and reoccurring headaches
- Chronic nausea and vomiting
- Dilated pupils
Our lawyers can help with a child brain injury.
Sadly, we often meet with very young children who have suffered a severe head injury. Head and brain injuries are very common in children, accounting for approximately 100,000 hospital visits each year. Most child head injuries occur as a result of car accidents, bicycle accidents, falls, sporting injuries, or child abuse. Child injuries are complicated when it comes to compensation. It is more difficult to determine the measure of the loss of brain function in a child. In adults, there are prior records to rely on. Sadly, children are more susceptible than adults to permanent brain injury, even when the forces involved are equivalent. If your child has been in an accident and suffered a brain injury, it is imperative that you consult with an experienced lawyer. No two head injuries are alike and it will be very important that you get the support and maximum compensation you need for the rest of your child’s life, as well as support at your home. We have the experience and networks in place to make sure that years from now your child has all the support and compensation they need.
Our lawyers help with your treatment and rehabilitation after a brain injury.
We can assist in making sure you are receiving the best treatments and rehabilitation and we will work with your team. It’s important to remember that programs and treatments will change, as the extent of the brain injury is more known. Most rehabilitation programs focus on the following components: cognitive, behavioral, vocational, educational, community re-entry and recreation. The active involvement of family members and friends throughout the rehabilitation process is a critical component for success. Our injury lawyers work closely with family, friends, doctors, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, physiotherapists and other health practitioners to make sure that everyone is doing everything they can to help rebuild after a brain injury. In addition, we work to ensure that our clients and their family are financially compensated for all losses of income (past and future), future care costs, and other related expenses or losses.
